I am an aspiring character artist and I'm planning to spend rest of the year working on such so for my very first short project I wanted to try something different. Environments are out of my comfort zone but I figured that trying my hand in one can only benefit me with new experience.

I am a big fan of "stylized" aesthetic so from all the possible briefs my favourite one was the Overwatch based project. For my scene chose a scene from Studio Ghibli's movie Kiki's Delivery Service. I thought that the paintery style of that shot would work well with hand painted feel of Overwatch scenery.

Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

My first step was analyzing how Blizzard created environments in Overwatch. I focused mainly on daylight scenes in more organic setting. Eichenwalde map was particulary helpful. Textures isn't overly detailed and the game relies heavily on interesting shapes, silhouttes and vibrant colour composition.

I decided to explore maps in the game to look at specific parts that would be helpful in my scene. I mainly focused on objects that would be present in my own scene such as trees, foliage, grass/gravel, wood and metal reflectivity.

After gathering enough references I quickly put together a basic blockout of things that are present in screenshot itself. Then I modeled some additional props to fill the scene with some context. I also fiddled with shape of house itself to give it more interesting silhouette.

Next step was taking props to Zbrush.

I have also started blocking out some shape to the base of the diorama. I wanted to use the long rocks I've made before to add some interesting detail to the bottom.
